What’s the flu?

The flu is a respiratory disease caused by influenza viruses.

What are the symptoms of the flu?

Common flu symptoms include:

Fever or chills
Headaches
Cough
Sore throat
Stuffy or runny nose
Muscle or body aches
Tiredness
Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea

In some cases, the flu can cause severe complications, especially for children and immunocompromised individuals. If you or a loved one are experiencing any of these signs or symptoms, please speak to a doctor or nurse right away.

Emergency signs in children:

Fast breathing or trouble breathing
Bluish skin color
Not drinking enough fluids
Not waking up or not interacting
Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
Fever with a rash

Emergency signs in adults:

Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
Sudden dizziness
Confusion
Severe or persistent vomiting

How can I prevent the flu?

Here are a few easy ways you can protect yourself from the flu:

Get your flu shot.
Wash your hands often.
Don’t touch your mouth, nose or eyes.
Eat healthy, stay hydrated and get plenty of rest.

I think I have the flu. Should I get tested, and how should I treat it?

If you think you have the flu, avoid contact with others and stay home as much as possible, except to get medical care or necessities. Your health care provider will help you determine if you need a flu test.

For most mild cases, all you need to do is rest, drink lots of fluids and take over-the-counter medications to manage fever, cough and congestion. If medically necessary, your provider may prescribe an antiviral medication. But it must be taken within 48 hours of getting sick for it to work.

If you think you need medical care, schedule a visit with your doctor or visit a nearby urgent care. And go to the nearest emergency room right away if any of your symptoms are life threatening.

When should I get my flu shot? How well does it work?

You should aim to get your flu shot by the end of October.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the flu shot can reduce your risk of getting the flu by between 40% and 60%. It’s also been shown to reduce the severity of illness if you do get sick, as well as the risk of complications and hospitalization.

Even if you have had the flu, you should still get your flu shot because you could get the flu again.

How does the flu spread?

The flu spreads primarily through person-to-person contact, usually when an infected person sneezes, coughs or speaks.

It can also be spread by touching a surface with the virus on it, then touching your face. That’s why it’s so important to keep your hands and surfaces clean!
