Shadowing and Observation Opportunities

Shadowing and observation experiences are offered for the benefit of career exploration (shadowing) or as required hours for medical school applications (observation).

Shadowing

Shadowing involves following an employee during their workday to learn about the job, common tasks, the work environment and schedule to provide insight for those interested in the job role. This experience helps an individual with career exploration or to determine their interest in a particular health care area.

You must be 16 years old to shadow, 18 years old to shadow in surgical areas. Parental consent is required for shadow requests for individuals under 18.

High school students should also consider Rise to Success and Volunteen student experiences.

Observation

Observation refers to shadowing an employee to complete required hours for medical school applications. This is observation only with no hands-on experience.

Details

Shadowing and observation requests must be submitted no less than 30 days prior to the requested shadow date.

All persons making requests to shadow must register at Acemapp.org for clearance by providing the required documentation and completing training modules.

Requests will be processed in partnership with the Atrium Health Floyd clinical placement coordinator in the Center for Clinical Excellence (Clinical Education).
