Rita's Story
I did not battle my weight until after my first child was born. I tried several diet programs but usually relied on Weight Watchers because I felt it was a healthy program. I could lose weight. I even reached lifetime member status. The problem was keeping the weight off. I would lose 50 pounds and gain 60. I would lose some and gain more. It’s like being an alcoholic. Once you are off the wagon, you are off the wagon. I guess I am a foodaholic.
Then, my health had started to decline. I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I had really bad arthritis in my ankles and knees. My decision to have weight loss surgery was the result of those health issues more than anything else.
I had osteoarthritis. I had a real hard time getting around. I was to the point of having knee replacement surgery. I just wanted to be healthier. I didn’t realize at the time that losing weight would make such a difference.
After researching my weight loss surgery options, I went to an educational session thinking I would have the gastric band procedure because it was less invasive. But as I learned more, I realized that gastric bypass was the best for me. It was the right decision.
I have not regretted it one minute.
My advice for anyone considering weight loss surgery is to have faith in yourself. Dr. Scott has been blessed with a wonderful talent and a wonderful love for life and for people. If you need support, the bariatric team is there for you. There is nothing too small or too complicated for them.
Since my surgery, I am more confident. I am more at ease. I love shopping now. I am able to go into a regular store, pick something up off the rack and wear it. I am more the person I thought I was on the inside, and I don’t have to try and cover up the outside.
